The Grand Canal at night: your options
After dark the palace facades, the bridges and the domes of Santa Maria della Salute look very different from the water. You can see them from an evening gondola, from a shared gondola experience, from a night water bus or from a water taxi. Each works differently, and none of them follows a fixed lighting programme.
The classic choice is a private gondola. Evening rates start at 19:00. If you prefer to share the boat and the cost, look at shared gondola rides in the tour list below. For daytime trips and the full route, see our gondola ride guide.

Our picks: the Grand Canal in the evening
Our take: the evening gondola is the classic choice for the canal after dark. The galleon dinner suits a longer night on the lagoon, and the palace opera is the indoor option.

Ways to see the canal after dark
Pick by budget and group size, not by the hour on the clock.
Private evening gondola
The set rate is €110 for 35 minutes between 19:00 and 04:00, for up to five passengers. The price is per boat, not per person. Other lengths are charged in proportion, and a few minutes either way are normal because of traffic, tide and weather. The rate does not guarantee that a gondola is waiting at a given station.
Gondola ride guide →Shared gondola experience
A shared gondola experience starts from €42.90 per person and lasts 1 hour in total, including 30 minutes in the gondola, with live commentary. It is not an evening product by default, so check the departure time before you book. For one or two people it often costs less than a private boat. With a full boat of five, the private rate split between you is usually cheaper.
Grand Canal boat tours →Night water bus
A night service (Notturno) runs across the Grand Canal, the Giudecca and the Lido. It does not stop at the same landings as line 1, so read the destination display before you board. Late departures on line 1 also differ from the daytime pattern of roughly one boat every 12 minutes.
Vaporetto line 1 →Water taxi
One consortium charges a €15 night surcharge between 22:00 and 07:00. The base price stays the same for up to four people, and each additional person costs €10. Tide can stop a taxi from reaching a hotel landing directly.

Figures as of 2026. Confirm prices when you book.
| Option | Price | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private gondola | €110 per boat | 35 minutes, 19:00 to 04:00 | Couples and groups of up to five |
| Shared gondola | From €42.90 per person | 1 hour with 30 minutes in the boat | Solo travellers and pairs |
| Night water bus | Regular tariff | Night timetable | Seeing the canal on a budget |
| Water taxi | Base price plus €15 at night | 22:00 to 07:00 surcharge | Late arrivals with luggage |
For most couples, a private gondola at the start of the evening rate is the simplest way to see the canal after dark. A solo traveller or a pair on a budget will usually do better with a shared ride or the water bus.
What to expect on the water at night
Lighting changes with the hour, the weather and the building, and there is no programme you can plan around. Do not book an evening trip for a specific light show.
Bring an extra layer for the water. Hold on when boats pass, because wash can rock a small boat. The Ponte degli Scalzi at the station end and the Fondaco dei Turchi both look different after dark, and the photos on this page show how.
Museum opening hours are not evening hours. Ca' Pesaro announced a special late opening from 20 to 22 November 2026 until 20:00, with entry until 19:00. Otherwise plan museums for the day. For Piazza San Marco after dark, see Piazza San Marco.
