Grand Canal museums at a glance

Several of Venice's best-known museums stand on the Grand Canal or just behind it. That makes them easy to combine with a boat ride. Ca' Rezzonico, Ca' Pesaro, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Palazzo Grassi, Punta della Dogana and the Natural History Museum are all open to visitors in 2026. Ca' d'Oro is closed for works.

Each museum has its own operator, ticket and closing day, so there is no single canal pass. Seeing the palaces from the water first helps you decide which interiors you want to enter. Our Grand Canal boat tours page shows the options.

Each museum in detail

What to expect, what it costs and what to check first.

Ca' Rezzonico

The Museum of the Venetian Eighteenth Century fills a palace on the canal. The ticket is €15, or €7.50 for ages 6 to 14, students aged 15 to 25 and visitors over 65. Children from 0 to 5 enter free, as do visitors with disabilities and their companion. Bring proof for any reduced or free category. The audio guide app is included. Scaffolding currently stands in the ballroom for restoration, while the other rooms are open. Last entry is one hour before closing.

Ca' Pesaro

The International Gallery of Modern Art shares one €15 ticket with the Museum of Oriental Art in the same building. Reductions follow the same pattern as Ca' Rezzonico, with €7.50 for ages 6 to 14, students aged 15 to 25 and visitors over 65. Individual rooms close from time to time and works go out on loan, so you may not see the full circuit. An extended opening to 20:00, with entry until 19:00, is announced for 20 to 22 November 2026. The nearest vaporetto stop is San Stae.

Peggy Guggenheim Collection

The collection occupies Palazzo Venier dei Leoni at Dorsoduro 701, between Accademia and Salute. Adults pay €17, visitors over 70 pay €14, students under 26 pay €9 with ID and children under 10 enter free. The audio guide costs €7. Booking a time slot online is recommended while places last, and you can also buy at the museum desk. Large bags are not allowed, and food and drink are banned, including in the garden. Line 1 stops at Accademia and Salute, line 2 at Accademia.

Natural History Museum

The Museo di Storia Naturale di Venezia Giancarlo Ligabue is in the Fondaco dei Turchi. Tickets cost €15, or €7.50 for ages 6 to 14, students aged 15 to 25 and visitors over 65. Children from 0 to 5 enter free. Its seasons differ from those of Ca' Rezzonico and Ca' Pesaro, with the winter hours starting on 1 October. Last entry is one hour before closing.

Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana

Both venues host the Pinault Collection. Palazzo Grassi is at Campo San Samuele 3231, and Punta della Dogana is at Dorsoduro 2, next to the Salute stop. One €20 joint ticket covers both. The reduced ticket is €15, ages 20 to 26 pay €7 and visitors under 20 enter free. Reductions need proof.

In the 2026 season, Palazzo Grassi shows its exhibitions from 29 March 2026 to 10 January 2027, and Punta della Dogana from 29 March to 22 November 2026. Both close between exhibitions, so do not assume they are open all year. A permanent Pinault Collection display at Palazzo Grassi is announced from 21 March 2027. Wednesdays bring free entry only for Venice residents and students, not for all visitors. Groups of more than 15 people must reserve.

Ca' d'Oro and Ca' Foscari

One is closed, the other opens its doors on Saturdays.

Ca' d'Oro is closed

The Galleria Giorgio Franchetti has been fully closed since 2 February 2026. Works cover the exhibition rooms, visitor routes, lighting and climate control, access and safety. Reopening is planned for spring 2027, and other plans put the end of works at May 2027. No tickets are on sale for a regular visit in the meantime. You can still admire the Gothic façade from the water or from the Ca' d'Oro stop.

Ca' Foscari

Ca' Foscari is a university building, not a museum. Student guides run free 40-minute tours, normally on Saturdays at 10:00, 10:40, 11:20 and 12:00. Meet 10 minutes early in the courtyard at Dorsoduro 3246. Some Saturdays are skipped and the rooms you see depend on university use, so check the monthly schedule first.

Plan your museum day

Ways to fit the museums around the canal.

Line 1 stops at Ca' Rezzonico, Accademia and Salute in that order, which makes a south-end museum day easy. On a Tuesday, Ca' Rezzonico, the Guggenheim, Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana are closed, so choose Ca' Pesaro or the Natural History Museum. On a Monday, do the reverse.

Museums on St Mark's Square, including the Museo Correr, have their own guide. For a wider plan of the city, see things to do in Venice.
