Best time to visit the Grand Canal
There is no single best month. Mild days with fewer weather risks come in late spring and in September. Winter is colder and brings fog and high water, and late autumn is when high water has been most frequent. Rain falls in every month, so pack a layer whenever you go.
Weather matters most for time on the water. If your main plan is a Grand Canal boat tour, aim for a day with dry, calm conditions and book a flexible slot. The figures below are long-term averages, not a forecast for your dates.

May, June and September are milder in the daytime than high summer, which suits a long ride on an open boat. For most visitors who want mild weather on the water, late spring or September is the safest pick.

High water (acqua alta) and the MOSE barriers
Calm, practical facts instead of worry.
When it happens
An analysis of the years 1872 to 2008 found high water most often in November, then December and October. That describes the older pattern, not the chance on a given day today.
What the barriers do
The MOSE barriers at the lagoon entrances close temporarily to separate the sea from the lagoon at high tide. Since October 2020, sea and lagoon levels are measured separately during closures. The system is still under construction, and it does not promise that every low walkway stays dry.
What it means for boats
In fog or when water rises above +95 cm, water bus service can change. Alerts appear on landing displays, through the mobility info service and by call centre. Check them before you leave.
Season by season
Spring (March to May): temperatures climb from 12.5 °C highs in March to 21.5 °C in May. April and May both bring around 66 to 70 mm of rain.
Summer (June to August): the warmest weeks, with daytime highs from 24.9 to 27.7 °C. Rain is still possible.
Autumn (September to November): September is mild, and October and November are wetter and cooler. High water is most likely at the end of this period.
Winter (December to February): cold days with highs around 7 to 9 °C, and fog is possible. Dress warmly for a boat.
Dates that shape a trip: the Regata Storica falls on the first Sunday of September (see the regatta guide), and the Festa della Salute on 21 November. The day-visitor fee ran on 60 selected days from 3 April to 26 July in 2026, so check the current calendar before a later trip. Ca' d'Oro stays closed until spring 2027.

Opening hours change with the season
Hours as of 2026. Museums use different seasonal splits.
| Place | Summer hours | Winter hours | Closed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ca' Rezzonico | 1 April to 31 October, 10:00–18:00 | 1 November to 31 March, 10:00–17:00 | Tuesday |
| Ca' Pesaro | 1 April to 31 October, 10:00–18:00 | 1 November to 31 March, 10:00–17:00 | Monday |
| Natural history museum | 1 June to 30 September, 10:00–18:00 | 1 October to 31 May, 09:00–17:00 | Monday |
Last entry is an hour before closing at Ca' Rezzonico and Ca' Pesaro. See the museums page for tickets and details. Between 1 April and 31 October Ca' Rezzonico and Ca' Pesaro keep their longer summer hours, so late spring and September combine mild weather with longer opening days.
