Gondola ride prices in 2026

The city sets the fare for a gondola ride, and it is the same for every gondolier. By day, from 09:00 to 19:00, a ride of 30 minutes costs €90. At night, from 19:00 to 04:00, a ride of 35 minutes costs €110. Up to 5 passengers fit in the boat. The price is for the boat, so a couple and a family of five pay the same.

Nothing in the fare obliges you to share the boat with strangers. If you want a different length, the price is charged in proportion to the time. A few minutes more or less can happen because of traffic, tide and weather.

Private or shared gondola

Prices for 2026. The first two rows are per boat, the last is per person.

OptionTimePriceWhat you get
Private gondola, by day30 minutes, 09:00 to 19:00€90 per boatA boat to yourself, up to 5 people
Private gondola, at night35 minutes, 19:00 to 04:00€110 per boatA boat to yourself, up to 5 people
Shared gondola experience1 hour in total, 30 minutes in the gondolaFrom €42.90 per personLive commentary, a meeting point and set times

For most couples a private ride is the simpler choice: €90 shared between two is €45 each, close to a shared ride from €42.90 each. A group of four pays €22.50 each and a group of five €18 each, so a private boat is clearly cheaper per head. A solo traveler pays less in a shared gondola, because the private fare is for the whole boat.

How a gondola ride works

The points that most often surprise first-time riders.

The route

A 30-minute ride does not follow a fixed route along the whole Grand Canal. The time decides the length, not the other way round. Ask the gondolier where the ride will go before you step in, and agree the length and the fare.

Day or night

The evening fare is €20 higher and the ride is 5 minutes longer. The night fare window runs until 04:00, but a gondolier may not be waiting at the station late at night. Read more on the canal at night.

Music and commentary

The city fare covers the boat and the gondolier. Singing is not automatically included. A shared experience includes live commentary, and music only comes with products that name a serenade.

Shared booking terms

One shared gondola provider asks you to arrive 10 minutes before the start. It refunds cancellations and changes made at least 24 hours ahead. Booking ahead is recommended there, though not always required. Other providers have their own terms.

Gondola or water bus

A Line 1 ticket costs €9.50 and covers 75 minutes along the whole canal. A gondola is for a slower half hour, not for covering distance. Many visitors do both: the water bus for the full canal, a gondola for one quiet stretch.

In the boat

Step in only when the gondolier steadies the boat and stay seated while it moves. Passing boats make waves, so keep your hands inside.

Where to find a gondola

Gondola stations along the canal include Dogana, Santa Maria del Giglio, San Tomà, Carbon, Santa Sofia and San Marcuola, plus Trinità, Molo, Danieli and San Beneto. They show where gondoliers organize themselves, not that a boat is waiting at every station every hour. If one is empty, try the next.

Do not confuse a gondola station with a traghetto crossing. A traghetto is the ferry that takes you across the canal for €2, and some of those crossings are closed, including San Marcuola. For the Rialto area and its market, the guide to the Rialto Bridge covers the neighborhood in more detail. Gondola rides across the rest of the city are on Venice gondola rides.

Gondola ride: frequently asked questions

How much does a gondola ride in Venice cost?

€90 for 30 minutes from 09:00 to 19:00 and €110 for 35 minutes from 19:00 to 04:00. The price is for the whole boat of up to 5 passengers, not per person. A shared experience is priced per person and starts at €42.90.

How many people fit in a gondola?

At most 5 passengers. The fare stays the same whether you are one person or five.

Can I have a longer ride?

Yes. Other lengths are charged in proportion to the time. Agree length and fare with the gondolier before you start.

Do I have to share the gondola with strangers?

No. The city fare does not require sharing. If you want a lower price per person as a solo traveler, a shared experience is the alternative.

Is the gondola ride on the whole Grand Canal?

Not by default. A 30-minute ride covers only part of the 3,800 m canal. For the full length, take Vaporetto Line 1, which needs about 44 minutes end to end.

Is grandcanal.org run by the gondoliers or the city?

No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the gondoliers, the city or any boat operator.
