Vaporetto Line 1 at a glance
Line 1 is the water bus that follows the whole Grand Canal. It starts at Piazzale Roma, calls at the train station, and then follows the canal to San Marco Vallaresso. From there the line continues to the Lido, which is outside the canal stretch. It is the cheapest way to see the palaces from the water. If you prefer a private boat, compare a gondola ride or Grand Canal boat tours.
On a sample trip in the autumn 2026 timetable, a boat leaving Piazzale Roma at 06:21 reached San Marco Vallaresso at 07:05, which is 44 minutes. By day the boats mostly run every 12 minutes. Early and late trips run to a different pattern, and summer and autumn timetables differ, so check the current timetable for your date.

Our pick: a pass for line 1
Our take: if you ride line 1 more than a few times, a pass is simpler than single tickets.

Vaporetto fares in 2026
The ticket prices for the Venice network.
| Ticket | Valid for | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 75 minutes | €9.50 |
| 24 hours | 24 hours | €25 |
| 48 hours | 48 hours | €35 |
| 72 hours | 72 hours | €45 |
| 7 days | 7 days | €65 |
| Youth: 3 days plus Rolling Venice | 3 days, ages 6 to 29 | From €33 |
For most visitors, a single at €9.50 is right for one ride along the canal. Three rides in a day cost more than the 24-hour pass at €25, so buy the pass if you plan to hop on and off. The youth offer is for the ages 6 to 29 only and is not an adult price.
Line 1 and Line 2
Line 2 also uses the Grand Canal, but it makes fewer stops. On the through daytime trip it calls at Piazzale Roma, Ferrovia, San Marcuola-Casinò, Rialto, San Tomà, San Samuele and Accademia, and ends at San Marco Giardinetti, a different landing stage from Vallaresso. A sample trip took 33 minutes. It does not stop at Ca' Rezzonico or the Salute.
Do not count on Line 2 as an express for the whole day. Which stops it serves and how far it runs depend on the trip, so read the destination sign before you board. Early and late trips south of Rialto are not always run through, either.

Using the water bus
Tickets, children, exclusions and disruptions.
Buy before, validate on boarding
Buy the ticket before the ride and validate it when you get on. Time tickets let you change boats and break your trip within their validity.
Children
Children under 6 travel free on the Venice network. Another price page words the limit as up to the age of six, so check the rule if your child is exactly six.
What the ticket does not cover
Alilaguna boats and the airport service are priced separately and are not covered by a city ticket. Do not rely on a Vaporetto ticket for an airport boat.
Fog and high water
In fog or when the water rises above +95 cm, the boat service can change. Notices go up at the landing stages. Read more on the best time to visit.
At night
A night service called Notturno runs on the Grand Canal, Giudecca and Lido, but its stops are not identical to Line 1. Look at the current timetable. More on the canal at night.
