Where to stay on the Grand Canal

The Grand Canal runs through five districts of Venice. Cannaregio and San Marco lie on one bank, San Polo and Dorsoduro on the other, and Santa Croce also borders the canal. Which one suits you depends on how you will travel: by water bus, on foot or by water taxi.

Hotels on the Grand Canal do not all have a canal view or a landing of their own. Ask the hotel in writing whether your room faces the water and whether the hotel has its own dock. If you arrive with luggage, a water taxi can take you close to the door, though the tide sometimes stops a taxi from reaching a hotel landing directly.

For most visitors who plan to use the water bus every day, San Polo around Rialto or San Tomà is the simplest base, because both lines stop there. If museums are the priority, Dorsoduro puts several of them close together.

Getting around from your hotel

Line 1 and line 2 do different jobs.

Line 1: every stop

It runs from Piazzale Roma past Ferrovia, San Marcuola, San Stae, Ca' d'Oro, Rialto, San Tomà, Ca' Rezzonico, Accademia and Salute to San Marco Vallaresso, then on to the Lido. Daytime boats come roughly every 12 minutes.

Vaporetto line 1 →

Line 2: fewer stops

The all-day run calls at Piazzale Roma, Ferrovia, San Marcuola, Rialto, San Tomà, San Samuele, Accademia and San Marco Giardinetti. An example run took 33 minutes. It does not stop at Salute or Ca' Rezzonico, and early and late runs differ, so read the destination display.

Water taxi and traghetto

A water taxi reaches many but not all hotel landings. For a quick crossing between the banks, the traghetto costs €2 and runs on a daytime timetable, so it is not an evening option.

Arriving by car

The municipal car park at Piazzale Roma charges €35 per 24 hours for vehicles up to 2.20 m high. It is open around the clock, and booking ahead is recommended. From there, a water bus stop is close by.

Booking tips for a hotel on the water

Rooms facing the canal and rooms facing a courtyard may be priced differently, so compare them on the same dates. Ask which floor the room is on, whether there is a lift, and whether luggage can reach the door by boat or has to be carried over bridges.

Overnight guests in a hotel in the municipality are exempt from the day-visitor access fee but must be registered. Keep the QR confirmation. For city-wide advice on accommodation, see where to stay in Venice. For the area around the square, see where to stay near Piazza San Marco.

If you want to see the canal from the water during your stay, add a gondola ride or a ride on line 1. A 24-hour water bus pass costs €25 as of 2026.

Where to stay on the Grand Canal: frequently asked questions

Which area is best for a first visit?

For most first-time visitors, San Polo near Rialto or San Tomà is a practical base, because lines 1 and 2 both stop there. Dorsoduro suits a museum-focused stay.

Does every hotel on the Grand Canal have a canal view?

No. Being on the canal does not guarantee a view from every room. Ask the hotel which rooms face the water.

How do I get to my hotel with luggage?

By water bus to the nearest stop, or by water taxi. A taxi cannot always reach a hotel landing because of the tide, so ask the hotel where it can drop you.

Is line 2 faster than line 1?

On an example run, line 2 took 33 minutes to San Marco Giardinetti against 44 minutes for line 1 to San Marco Vallaresso. It has fewer stops and does not call at Salute or Ca' Rezzonico.

Do hotel guests pay the access fee?

Guests staying in the municipality are exempt but must register. The 2026 fee calendar ended on 26 July, so check the current calendar before you travel.

Is grandcanal.org an official site?

No. It is an independent guide with no link to hotels, the City of Venice, ACTV or any boat operator. We do not recommend or rate individual hotels here.
